The Benefits of the Acai Berry

Acai Berries

The acai berry, a deep red fruit, grows on the acai palm tree (Euterpe oleracea) and is native to Central and South America. The acai berry is a relative to blueberries, cranberries and numerous other dark purple fruits. The berry has been touted as a superfood by marketers, who claim that the acai berry has numerous health benefits and can help people quickly shed pounds. While the acai berry is in fact a healthy food, scientific studies have yet to prove that all these claims are true. Thus, consumers should do their own research on the berry before trusting everything these marketers say.

What scientists have discovered about the acai berry is that it is a fruit rich in anthocyanins and flavonoids. These substances are antioxidants that help the body protect itself from free radicals, which are harmful byproducts. By eating foods like acai berries that are rich in antioxidants, you can help curb the effects of free radicals that often cause diseases, such as heart disease and cancer. Antioxidants can also help alleviate the effects of aging.

While there’s much research proving that a diet rich in antioxidants can help promote weight loss, scientists have not found that acai berries have weight loss benefits that extend beyond the known benefits of other antioxidant-rich foods. Nor have scientists found that acai berries have greater benefits than other fruits. Nevertheless, scientists are still studying the berry to determine if it has any health benefits that have not yet been discovered.

The Many Benefits of Pomegranates

Pomegranates are fruits grown on deciduous shrubs or small trees. Although the pomegranate is mostly native to the Himalayas in north Pakistan, Northern India and the Iranian Plateau, the fruit is now grown in parts of California and Arizona. Pomegranates have become increasingly popular in recent years thanks to their likeable taste and multiple health benefits.

Pomegranates have been widely touted for the health benefits their antioxidants provide. Studies have indicated that antioxidants in fruits like pomegranates help neutralize free radicals, preventing them from causing premature aging and disease.

What you may not know, though, is that they also have multiple other benefits. They are an excellent source of vitamin C, an immunity booster (just one pomegranate can account for 16 percent of your recommended daily intake of the vitamin). They’re also packed with fiber, containing about five grams for each half cup of fruit. To get the fiber, you must eat the seeds of the fruit; they can be sprinkled on cereal, waffles or frozen yogurt. The fruit is also a good source of potassium; drinking eight ounces of pomegranate juice provides you with 10 percent of your daily quota for potassium.

In pilot studies and lab research, scientists have determined that pomegranate juice is helpful in reducing the risk factors of heart disease. Pomegranate juice has tannins that lower bad cholesterol levels and reduce oxidative stress levels.

When buying the fruit, purchase plump pomegranates with the skin on. You can refrigerate them for up to three months. Arils, or the seeds, can be frozen for up to six months.

The Benefits of Hot Yoga

Throughout the world, yoga lovers everywhere are embracing hot yoga, which involves yoga practitioners completing asanas in well-heated studios to bring peace and relaxation to the mind and body.

Hot yoga differs from the more well-known Bikram yoga, which was developed in 1974 and consists of a series of 26 asanas performed in an exact sequence in room heated to 80 to 105 degrees. Bikram yoga typically involves specialized breathing as well.

Instead, hot yoga is a type of Hatha yoga. Although practitioners will still experience many of the benefits of Bikram yoga, they do not need to be versed in the exact philosophy or practices of the Bikram method.

Hot yoga offers many health benefits; practitioners often report that the method increases flexibility and relaxes ligaments, tendons and muscles. Hot yoga also helps to release toxins, increase weight loss, tone muscles, boost the immune system, release toxins and improve range of motion. Those suffering from chronic illnesses, such as arthritis, circulatory problems and thyroid disorders have also reported that hot yoga reduces their symptoms.

As with any sport, there are a few precautions to keep in mind before beginning to practice hot yoga. The practitioner must be in good physical condition and should be able to tolerate extreme heat. If the practitioner is unsure, he or she should sit through a few hot yoga classes to allow the body to adjust to the heat before moving to the more advanced yoga postures. Because hot yoga involves sweating, practitioners must also be extra careful to drink plenty of water before and after the session to replenish the body.

Finding the Key to Weight Loss

Thousands of people fall for diet scams on a daily bases and with good reason. The diet industry is a billion dollar industry that is geared to making your believe that you can lose weight and all your weight loss issues will never come back if you can only follow a specific plan that the commercial is advertising. However, whatever the product that they are advertising is offering, there is no guarantee that the product will be the answer to you prayers.

For many people, trying fad diet is just another way to fail over and over again until they are left feeling like they will never be able to be the thin person that they always wanted to be. The problem with fad diets is that they only work for a limited time because they are limiting the amount of food that you are taking in. Of course you will lose weight- you are starving! But what happens when you try to live a normal life and incorporate the rules of the fad diet? You cannot do it and you have failed at another diet. The cycle does not have to continue like this because the answer to weight loss is so much easier than people think it is.

The key to weight loss is actually a very simple mathematical equation that has been working for people for centuries. You need to burn more calories then you are taking in. Weight loss is that simple!

The thing that you need to remember is that food is fuel is food for the body. When you are putting tow much fuel in your car what happens? Your gas tank runs over. The same thing happens with your body except that your waist line spills over. What you need to do is find out how many calories that you are burning during the day and then eat less calories than that. The equations is so simple, it actually makes fad diets look rather stupid.

Living a Healthy Lifestyle with a Vegan or Vegetarian Diet

When you tell people that you are living a vegan or vegetarian lifestyle many people think that you are choosing to live that way because you are just a crazy animal lover who does not want to eat animals. While that might be the case, there are other reasons that people become vegans or vegetarians other than their love for animals. A vegan or vegetarian lifestyle is one of the healthiest lifestyles that a person can enter.

A vegan or vegetarian lifestyle is so healthy because they are both low in cholesterol. Cholesterol is only found in animal products. Therefore, the less animal products you eat the less cholesterol you will consume. Obviously, a vegan lifestyle where a person does not consume any animal products at all verses a vegetarian diet where some still eat eggs and dairy, is healthier when it comes to cholesterol. Rather than get your protein from an animal product you will get it from fiber packed beans and soy.

Everywhere you go, you hear that you need to eat more fiber. While you could drink the disgusting power drinks, it would be easier to just eat more fruits and vegetables. On a vegan or vegetarian diet you will more than consume your daily requirements of fruits and vegetables. When you are choosing to take meat out of your diet, or all animal products, you are forcing yourself to replace staples in your diet with healthy alternatives that are higher in fiber like beans or soy, both of which are plant based.

So many people take vitamins and minerals to try to get their daily requirements for nutrients that their body needs to work properly. Fruits and vegetables and whole grains are packed full of nutrients. A vegan and vegetarian diet helps you plan healthy meals that will ensure that you are putting healthy food into your body that is packed with the nutrients that you need.
